Bechdel Test :The Best Man Holiday

The movie that I chose for the Bechdel test is the Best Man Holiday it is the sequel to the movie, the Best Man. In this movie all the main characters return and gather for Christmas. Upon their return they each have secrets or issues that they haven’t dealt with since the last time they all seen each other. However, the main character Mia has a secret that will change everything and consequently bring everyone together. In the middle of the movie Mia reveals that she is dying from cancer, and that’s why she gathered everyone together. Mia wanted to see everyone together for the last time. After everyone finds out about how sick she is they try and settle their differences including her husband and his “best friend”.

The movie did pass the Bechdel test, and this did not surprise me. This didn’t surprise me because the movie had a traumatic event in it, giving the characters something more to talk about other than their relationships. The movie has six female characters who are very close which is another reason why I wasn’t surprised that it passed the Bechdel test. The women in this film did talk about their relationships, but that’s not all they talked about. They gossiped about one another, talked about children, careers, pregnancies and they mourned over the loss of their close friend together.

Honestly, I don’t know if this is a feminist film. Just guessing I would say no, this isn’t a feminist film. This film is more of a family orientated film with a message about love and the power forgiveness. I could be wrong, but I guess I don’t really know what a feminist film is. When I think of a feminist film, I think of a film that empowers women. I’m not saying that this film brings women down, but I don’t think that was the point of this film.
