What Happens in Vegas

In the 2008 film, What Happens in Vegas, a wild night in Vegas for two strangers end in a marriage. The next day, the couple meets to discuss getting a divorce. During the conversation they win three million dollars on a slot machine. A judge rules that they must remain married for six months if they want to receive their winnings. This is a difficult task for the pair but they stick it out for the money and in the end remain married. This movie did indeed pass the Bechdel test. The main female role played by Cameron Diaz is named Joy. Joy is extremely strong willed and often had power during the movie. Joy is very successful and works in a big office building, while her newly wed has no job and spends his days on the couch. This is uncommon because men are known to be the breadwinner. Men are supposed to work while the woman takes care of the house.  In one scene, the hotel had accidently double booked a room. Joy very confidently and assertively convinced the front desk to upgrade their rooms, while the men stood back and watched. This being said, I do not think this movie is feminist. This is just one example of Joy being independent. When the couple would fight Joy would often be the one with the upper hand. Joy's best friend in the movie was a girl named Tipper. Tipper is in many scenes but is  only seen discussing the marriage. Joy worked with another girl named Chung. Chung is the only other female character in the movie. Joy and Chung are only seen discussing work related topic. This made me feel uncomfortable because the females outside of work only talk about men and the females in work only talk about work. It was almost as if Chung didn't have a personality and was only serving one purpose in the movie.
