She's the Man

The movie She’s the Man is about a girl named Viola who poses as her brother Sebastian so that she can play Men’s Soccer at Sebastian’s new school because Viola’s school dropped the Women’s Soccer due to low participation. When she tried out for the Men’s team at her old school, they said she couldn’t play because she was a girl.
The movie She’s the Man passed the Bechdel Test. The movie had two women who talked to each other and it was about something other than girls. The names of those girls are Viola and Monique. Viola is the main character that poses to be her twin brother. And Monique is the girlfriend of Viola’s twin brother Sebastian. The part where the women spoke to each other was when Viola was dressed as girl and Monique spoke about how Viola was not very ladylike and would not fit in well at the pageant. There were many times that Viola talked to Monique but when these encounter occurred, Viola was dressed as her twin brother Sebastian. I did not consider these encounters as part of the Bechdel test because Viola was not represented as a girl so it should not count toward the Bechdel test.

She’s the Man is a feminist movie because it is all about a girl proving that she is just as good as the boys. This movie is all about proving that women are equal to men. Viola had to disguise herself as a man, to be looked at by the coach as a man player with skill rather than a women player with skill playing with and against men. I also think this is a feminist movie because it is about how women are oppressed. Society always talks about if someone sets their mind to something they can do no matter what odds are stacked against them. This movie proves society wrong because she is set to play on the mens team but has to disguise as the dominant group just to be looked at.
