The movie I watched was called
Something Borrowed and it did pass the Bechdel Test. It is about two best
friends who fall in love with the same man, one was friends with him from the
start and had been in love with him for a long time and the other was engaged
to be married to him. The wedding ends up being called off when he realizes he
has always been in love with the other woman. The two women characters are
named Rachel and Darcie, and there are a couple more women with names in the
movie. They talked to each other multiple times throughout the movie. The
majority of their conversations were definitely about men, but they did talk
about other things at points in the movie. I think the movie is feminist. The
whole movie is based off of women chasing a man and that is all that was always
the focus throughout it. Some examples of things that I saw that caught my eye
right away was that the man always opened the door and the idea that we have
that men have to do that for women and it made me think, where did that come
from? Also, there was a lot of dancing throughout the movie and it was always
the woman dancing on the man and there were a few couple poses that reminded me
of the movie we watched in class. Another thing is the idea that a woman always
needs to have a man or that she needs a man to survive. The woman who is
engaged, Darcie, is always trying to set Rachel up with men to make sure she is
happy. Along with that, Rachel always acts really depressed when she is alone
and they make it seem that she is always thinking about a man. The women also
shop a lot in the movies and do very “girly” things. Overall, although the
movie passed the test, it was still a pretty feminist movie.
